Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is an annual plant of the Pedaliaceae family, widely cultivated for its seeds. It is believed to have been domesticated in the Indian subcontinent and it is even likely to be the first oilseed plant to be cultivated. Sesame is mainly cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions of Africa (Sudan) and Asia (India, Myanmar). It is growing strongly in sub-Saharan countries because of its easy cultivation and low production costs1.
